English version
The aim of the REMPAR EHPAD project was to analyse the factors associated with the spread of the epidemic within care homes in Brittany. The context of the study provided an opportunity to identify the managerial approaches that helped to limit the impact of the epidemic, as well as to determine which aspects of care home governance and their environment facilitated effective crisis management. In total, 231 care homes responded to the survey and 21 care home managers took part in an interview.
This research showed, in particular, that residents eating their meals in their rooms and having the opportunity for daily outdoor access were protective factors against the outbreak of the epidemic within a care home. The interviews with care home directors also highlighted difficulties linked, on the one hand, to the climate of uncertainty that accompanied the ‘first wave’ of the epidemic and, on the other, to an ‘ethical dilemma’ arising from the strict lockdown imposed on residents.
